Remove a payment method

If you have a payment method that you are no longer using or that has expired, here’s how to remove it:
  • Note: If you’re trying to the remove a payment option that's tied to a Microsoft subscription with recurring billing (such as Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Game Pass, or Office 365), it can't be removed until you change how you pay for the subscription. For the steps to do this, see How to change your Microsoft subscription payment method and options.
  • Remove a payment option online:
    • Sign in to the Payment options page with the Microsoft account that has the payment option you want to remove. If you’re having issues signing in to your Microsoft account, go to Microsoft account help.
    • Find the payment option you want to remove, and then select Remove.
    • Select Yes, remove to confirm that you want to remove the payment option.
  • Remove a payment option on Xbox One:
    • Sign in to an Xbox One console with the Microsoft account from which you want to remove the payment option. If you’re having issues signing in to your Microsoft account, go to Microsoft account help.
    • Press the Xbox  button on your controller to open the guide.
    • Select System  > Settings  > Account > Payment & billing.
    • On the Payment options screen, scroll right to the payment option you want to remove, and then select Remove.
    • Select Yes, Remove to confirm payment option removal.

Troubleshooting problems changing a payment method

If you're having problems adding, updating, or removing a payment method, here are some answers to common issues that may occur when you change a payment method:
  • I can’t remove a payment method or add a new one
    • Make sure the payment method isn’t tied to a Microsoft subscription or servicePayment methods used to pay for a Microsoft subscription can't be removed until you change how you pay for the subscription. You'll be specifically told if you have a subscription whose payment method needs to be changed in order to be able to remove a payment method.

  • I can’t add my PayPal account
    • You can only use PayPal accounts that have a credit card or confirmed bank account as a funding source. To use PayPal with your Microsoft account, make sure your PayPal account uses an accepted funding source or try another PayPal account.
    • PayPal can only be used as a payment method in certain countries and regions. For a list of the current countries and regions that you can use with PayPal, see Use PayPal with your Microsoft account.
  • I get a message to contact support when I try to remove a payment option
    • You may have a balance due for a Microsoft subscription. Get info about paying for a past-due Microsoft subscription.
  • I need to change my payment method for a third-party Office 365 subscription
    • If you bought an Office 365 subscription through a third-party retailer, see Manage your Office 365 subscription purchased through a third party.
  • I want to add a new payment method for a Microsoft subscription
